Last year was a record one for London hospitality and tourism. 19 million visitors travelled to the UK capital, up 2.6% on 2016. The good news is that this number is set to increase again, at least according to Visit Britain who expect tourists across the whole of the UK to top more than 41 million during 2018.
Visitors Love London
While Brexit may be a continuing source of uncertainty for many, it doesn’t seem to be putting visitors off. In fact, the lower value of the pound against the euro is proving a big driver.
There’s been a good start to Spring with plenty of hot and sunny weather and a perfectly timed royal wedding thrown into the mix. This has meant that takings have already been exceptionally good for this time of year.
One of the key reasons for the increased popularity of London and the UK, according to the Guardian, is that tourists from China, Europe and the USA are coming here to take advantage of low exchange rates to buy luxury goods. It could see spending by overseas visitors rise to nearly £27 billion in 2018. Last year, the UK also reached its highest place in the global rankings coming an unprecedented third. London hospitality played a big role in that result.
London Summer Events
There are also some key events taking place in the UK capital to attract visitors over the coming months. There’s the traditional Trouping of the Colour, Wimbledon tennis and the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. The Royal Victoria Docks are hosting the World Powerboat Championship and there are many music festivals such as the Wireless Festival in Finsbury Park.
Events like Wimbledon attracted just under half a million visitors last year from all around the world. At any time during the summer, the streets of our capital are swarming with tourists from all over the world.
